Žilinská univerzita v Žiline in its current form was founded in 1953, separating from the Czech Technical University, Prague. Initially, it was called the University of Railways with five faculties (transport, military, electrical engineering, engineering, construction).

Since 1959, it was called the Railway College or Higher School, and in 1960 it moved to Žilina, where several more faculties were added. Since 1980, it was called the College of Transport and Communications in Žilina. After the formation of new additional faculties and departments, since 1996 it has had its current name and is among the ten most popular universities in the country.

Since 2000, it has been a member of the European University Association (EUA), recognized as the best university in transport specialization in Europe. The university includes an educational aviation center for training air traffic controllers and pilots.

Location and education

Zilina is a picturesque city in the northwest of the country, the fifth largest.
