Matej Bel University, Banska Bystrica

University Mateja Bela v Banskej Bystrici was formed by merging the University of Economics, Services and Tourism with the Pedagogical Institute in 1992.

Historical place

It was named after the author of pedagogical, religious, philosophical and scientific works, Matej Bel, who was born in 1684. Banská Bystrica was founded by several families of German colonists in the twelfth century, and in the thirteenth century there was already a parish school, which later became a city school. In the seventeenth century there was a Protestant grammar school, which Matej Bel attended, and a Jesuit grammar school.

The history of University Mateja Bela v Banskej Bystrici begins in 1964, when the first university, opened in Banská Bystrica in 1954, began recruiting students for the Faculty of Education. Since 1973, a branch of the Faculty of Commerce of the University of Economics in Bratislava has been opened, on the basis of which the Faculty of Economics, Services and Tourism was formed in 1977.

In 1992, the University of Economics, Services and Tourism separated from the University of Economics in Bratislava, merged with the Pedagogical Institute, and today’s Matej Bel University was formed.

Capabilities of the University

Univerzita Mateja Bela v Banskej Bystrici is medium-sized, designed to train up to fifteen thousand students, the academic staff is about seven hundred teachers.

The university provides five dormitories near the academic buildings. Rooms for 2 and 3 people, bathroom and toilet are shared, there are showers, shared kitchens on the floor (with dishes, stove and microwave). The rooms have all the necessary furniture and bedding, free Internet.

The university is a member of the Association of European Universities.
